Think that the government did a good job planning for the Cash for Clunkers program? Imagine how well they are planning for the health care program, not to mention the other gazillion programs. When they run out or otherwise limit those health care dollars, you won't need just a bigger down payment on a car.
In the clunker program, one billion dollars took care of about 250,000 cars, at an average of $4,000 per car. I read one news report that indicated that 70-80% of the customers inquiring about the program didn't qualify as the combined mpg of their cars is greater than 18. IMAGINE how quickly the money would have disappeared if those people, with another 400,000 or so cars, did qualify! Further, how do you think those individuals feel about the program? By the government's definition, they drove efficient vehicles, as do countless other people!
Like those citizens who have saved and planned appropriately, and bought homes with mortgages they can afford, those car owners have DONE THE RIGHT THING. Now, they watch the slackers get the government bailouts! Sound familiar?

Any time government interferes with private enterprise the result is the same; all messed up and expensive. It cost us a billion dollars this time, and potentially two billion more. What goes through the minds of politicians to make them believe that government's role is to redistribute income. It always turns out the same, no matter how noble the goal.
