I am so proud of our Congressional leaders. At the last minute they managed to agree to not closing down the US Government. Well done!
Anybody care to make a guess of what the "preparatory costs" for the pending closure might have been? How many "Closed for Business" signs were made? How many schedules were re-arranged? How many letters prepared? How many meetings were devoted to the subject? In total, how many hours totally wasted because of the political grandstanding of the past couple of weeks?
Now the powers that be will surely take credit for "compromise" and "working together" to avoid the mess, the mess that only they created! Would that they would take ownership of the associated wastes and disruption. Maybe as group, they could reach into their own pockets and reimburse the people and it's government for the costs associated to their lack of performance.
If anyone I know deliberately wasted corporate resources like this, he or she would surely be moved out of that job and likely out of work. If any of my public sector friends had wasted resources on political issues we know what would happen to them. Yet, on it goes. Business as Usual. Politics over the greater good. (And, we wonder why we have the mess we have.)
Update: This just in from a friend:
We've been in a crazy mode at work. I was just saying to (a friend) that I don't know if things are more crazy, &/or if somehow we have less time for everything--it surely feels that way. Work has been nuts for different reasons (much to do, not enough people, same old story) and also due to the shut down threat, that really effected everyone this week (Con Calls, contingency plans, meetings with staff members explaining everything, etc.) the threat of the shutdown that didn't end up happening is very costly in the time it takes to prepare for it and the work that didn't get done because of it.
