I find the short bits from the Trends & Innovations section of the IBD to be very interesting and I will be posting many of those in the future. Here is the first from the 1/10/11 edition:
Man-made proteins sustain life
"Scientists at Princeton Univ. have created the first artificial proteins that enable the growth of living cells. In a study in the journal PloS One, they say they produced about 1 mil genetic sequences not found in nature. They inserted some of these proteins into bacteria in which natural genes had been deleted. Those with the artificial proteins survived while untreated ones didn't. The scientists say the discovery could aid research on currently untreatable diseases like Alzheimer's."
